You might know us because of our ambulance services. We're always there in an emergency, working to save lives, and we've been doing that for over 130 years. But there's some more you might not know about us.
Through our programmes and support, we're helping to build strong, resilient communities for the wellbeing of all, and supporting everyone in Aotearoa to live healthier, happier, and longer lives.
We provide care, comfort and help for those facing everyday challenges to their health, and we offer first aid education to all ages.
And of course, in an emergency, large or small, we are there for our communities.

Our impact
We're able to help care for you, your whānau, your loved ones and your community in many ways and we are grateful and humbled to be named New Zealand's Most Trusted Charity in the 2023 Reader's Digest Awards.
Here's a small snapshot of some of what we do.
Our ambulance staff respond to 600,000 emergency calls a year.
Waka Ora Health Shuttles transport more than 10,000 people to 70,000 medical appointments each year.
Every week, all around the motu, over 4,000 young people attend our youth and community programmes, learning new life saving skills, developing the confidence to be leaders, and making a positive difference within their communities.

How we're funded
As a charity, we rely on funding from the government, generous donations from other organisations and regular New Zealanders, as well as income from contracted services, to provide services across Aotearoa.

Our legacy
As a worldwide organisation, the story of St John goes back almost 1000 years to 11th century Jerusalem, where the first hospital was set up to care for sick people. Our history in Aotearoa New Zealand is a little more recent but we are proud to have been helping people since 1885.
